The introduction makes reference to Hannah Dustin a local resident who escaped from Indian kidnappers in 1697 reputedly by killing 10 captors. The introduction further extols the virtues of Haverhill women, who were "competent to discuss with wisdom the complicated affairs of colonial and revolutionary times, and equally able to organize the household, control the children and direct the servants." Contributor surnames include: Ames, Stover, Towle, Train, Whittier, Davis, Swett, Hobbs, Gillman, Perley, Rhodes, Hale, Beckwith and many more. There is a recipe titled "A Black Man's Recipe to Dress Rice" written in the period style of African American "patter". Early reference to the introduction of baking powder and evidence of the fight over what manufacturer had the truly pure ingredients.
